Regarding the date of our inaugural event on Sept 11th, this day is indeed symbolic. Our 180+ volunteers wanted to reclaim the American spirit  that stirs in each of us through volunteerism, generosity and hard work.  In my view, citizens cannot be defeated by a tough economy, politics, or apathy. We must celebrate our patriotism, our children and their achievements. We must set the bar higher for future generations.  Our parents made many sacrifices for us; so it is our turn to carry the torch of freedom and liberty even in a small town like Sierra Madre and by extension, across the world.

A community-wide project like "A Taste of Sierra Madre" allows a small town of 10,000 residents, friends, neighbors, police & fire departments, civic clubs  to rally and do something permanent and leave a lasting mark on children's lives in the most positive way not only in our backyard and but also in other communities because Americans can serve others. Our history as a democratic, faith-filled nation has taught us this lesson many times. We may need to be reminded of this responsibility from time to time. We are very blessed.
